Musandam Overnight Dhow Cruise Itinerary
Morning Departure
The dhow leaves at 10:00 am and returns at 9:00 am the next day.
- 9:30 am Board at Khasab portThe crew welcomes you with Arabic coffee, tea and fresh fruit, then gives a short safety briefing. The whole dhow is yours.
- 10:00 am Into the fjordsThe dhow sails into Khor Sham, the local name for the Musandam fjords, past the fishing villages of Nadifi, Qanah, Maqlab and Sham. None of them has a road.
- 11:00 am Dolphin watchingBottlenose and humpback dolphins often swim alongside the dhow. They’re wild, so sightings can’t be guaranteed.
- 12:00 pm Telegraph IslandThe first swim stop is near the ruins of the 1864 British telegraph station. Snorkel gear and life jackets are on board.
- 1:00 pm Lunch on boardFried chicken, rice, hummus, Arabic bread, vegetable curry, lentil curry and fruit.
- 3:00 pm Seebi IslandClear water and a rocky reef make this the best snorkeling of the day. Take the kayak out along the shore.
- 5:00 pm Anchor for the nightThe captain picks a quiet bay. Try the fishing hand-lines or paddle out once more while the light drops behind the cliffs.
- 7:30 pm BBQ dinner on deckChicken tikka, beef tikka, grilled fish, rice, vegetable curry, lentil curry, hummus, salad and Arabic bread.
- Night Sleep on deckThe crew lays out mattresses, pillows and blankets on the open shaded deck, and the toilet and shower on board have toiletries. With almost no lights in the fjords, the sky fills with stars. From December to February the nights get cool on the water, so bring a light jacket.
- 7:00 am BreakfastWake up to sunrise over the cliffs, then sit down to boiled eggs, yogurt, jam, bread, fresh fruit, juice, coffee and tea. There’s time for a last swim or a paddle in the kayak before the dhow heads back.
- 9:00 am Back at Khasab portRinse off in the shower on board before you step off. On the all inclusive option, your driver meets you at the port and has you home in Dubai around 12:30 pm.
Evening Departure
The dhow leaves at 5:00 pm and returns at 4:00 pm the next day. Report at Khasab port at 4:30 pm. You anchor for sunset, have the BBQ dinner and sleep on deck. In the morning you get breakfast, dolphin watching, swim stops at Telegraph and Seebi Islands and lunch on board, and you’re back at Khasab port at 4:00 pm.
Where You Sleep On The Overnight Dhow
Our overnight dhows are traditional wooden boats with open shaded decks. There are no cabins or air conditioned rooms, so you sleep on deck under the stars. After dinner, the crew lays out mattresses, pillows and blankets for everyone. The toilet and shower on board come with toiletries and towels.
The boat is yours alone, and the only other people on board are the crew. They anchor in a sheltered bay, so the water stays calm through the night. From December to February the nights get cool on the water, so bring a light jacket or sweater.
Why Choose A Private Overnight Dhow Cruise?
Most overnight cruises in Musandam are shared, and you can end up sleeping on the same deck as 15 or 20 strangers. Ours is private, with one family or one group of friends per boat. The crew plans the day around you, so lunch can wait if the kids want another swim, and you can stay up late on deck without keeping anyone awake.
It also works out cheaper than it sounds. AED 2,000 covers the whole boat for up to 3 guests, and a family of 2 adults and 2 kids pays AED 2,350.
Border Documents For The Overnight Cruise
You cross into Oman at the Al Dara border on both options, self drive or with our driver. Bring original documents, because the border doesn’t accept photocopies.
Documents For Every Guest
- Passport valid for at least 3 months from the travel date
- Emirates ID valid for at least 90 days for some nationalities. If your nationality gets a UAE visa on arrival, less validity is accepted
- If you hold more than one passport, bring the one you used to enter the UAE
Dependent visa holders must travel with their sponsor. Pending or canceled UAE visas are not accepted. Some nationalities pay AED 50 for the Oman visa at the border, so send us your nationality before you book and we’ll confirm.
If You Drive Yourself
- Vehicle registration card (Mulkiya), with the registered owner in the car
- Omani car insurance, sold at the border for about AED 100 if your policy doesn’t cover Oman
- Rented, mortgaged and bank financed cars are not allowed across the border without an NOC
Is The Overnight Dhow Cruise Good For Families?
Yes. The boat is private, so your kids can be as loud as they like on deck without bothering other guests. Life jackets are on board for every guest, including kids, and swimming is optional, so younger children can stay on the shaded deck. The toilet and shower are on board, and all food is halal.
Kids count toward the first 3 guests. Each extra kid pays AED 350 on self drive or AED 450 on all inclusive. Infants under 4 go free on self drive and pay AED 235 on all inclusive for their own seat in the vehicle, and we provide an infant car seat on request. Tell us your kids’ ages when you book so the crew can prepare accordingly.
